U2 in Mumbai & Career Highlight

During their teen years, the band attended Mount Temple Comprehensive School. Despite having limited musical proficiency, they formed well. They released their debut album (Boy) in 1980 after signing with Island Records. U2 earned a reputation as a socially and politically conscious band after the release of their singles such as ‘Pride’ and ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ from the album ‘In the Name of Love’ and their first UK number-one album ‘War’. They became popular globally by the mid-80s for their performance at Live Aid. Their 5th album ‘The Joshua Tree’ was released in 1987, and the rest is history! They became international superstars and achieved excellent commercial and critical success. The singles ‘I Still Haven’t Found What I’m Looking For’ and ‘With or Without You’ from ‘The Joshua Tree’ became their only No. 1 singles in the United States to date and topped the music charts around the world.

However, U2 faced backlash and creative stagnation after the release of their documentary/double album ‘Rattle and Hum‘ in 1988. With a new public image and musical direction, they reinvented themselves in the 90s. U2 embraced a more flippant and ironic vision by integrating influences from electronic dance music, industrial music, and alternative rock into their music. Their multimedia-intensive Zoo TV Tour and acclaimed 7th album ‘Achtung Baby‘ were a huge success. They experimented continuously till their 9th album ‘Pop’, which was released in 1997.

U2 established a more mainstream and conventional sound for themselves with their records ‘How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb’ and ‘All That You Can’t Leave Behind.’ They set records for the highest-grossing and highest-attended concert tour in history with their U2 360° Tour (2009–2011). Their album ‘Songs of Innocence’, released in 2014, received criticism for its no-cost and pervasive release through the iTunes Store.Their most recently released album was ‘Songs of Experience’ (2017).

U2 is of the world’s best-selling music bands, and they have a total of 14 released studio albums. They have sold an estimated 150–170 million records throughout the world. Time Magazine proclaimed U2 as ‘Rock’s Hottest Ticket’ in 1987, and they also won a BRIT award. U2 is the most awarded band in Grammy history with a total of 22 Grammys! In their 1st year of eligibility (2005), U2 was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. It is ranked at No. 22 on the Rolling Stone’s list of ‘The 100 Greatest Artists of All Time’. They have campaigned for several human rights, and social justice causes like Product Red, Jubilee 2000, Music Rising, War Child, Amnesty International, and the ONE/DATA campaigns throughout their careers as individuals and of course, as a band.
